Surfing on Kata Beach | PHUKET – THAILAND

Phuket is famous for beautiful beaches and also for surfing!  There are different surf spots on the island suitable for surfers with various levels of skills and experiences.

Although high season for Phuket as well as all beaches and islands on the Andaman (West coast of Thailand) is between November to January, it is not the ideal season for surfing.

Surf season on the Andaman side is between May to October.  In other words, it is game on when the Monsoon season hits (hence the waves!).  There will be rain and strong wind, but you can also expect clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine.

While there are many surf spots in Phuket as well as neighbouring provinces, Kata beach is one of our favourite spots for a few reasons! 🙂

First of all, the beach itself is STUNNING, and on great days the water is crystal clear.

Second, there are plenty of surf schools and surfboard rentals on the beach.  You can literally walk to any part of the beach and choose the board you want for the day.

Third, pretty much anyone with different skill levels can surf on Kata beach and enjoy the beautiful ocean like this!

We would also like to add the sunsets on Kata beach are always pretty magical.  We’ll leave you all to experience the evening golden sky yourselves 🙂

Finally, if you are looking for somewhat bigger waves, we recommend Surin beach and Naiharn beach 😉

RECOMMENDED SURF SCHOOLS

1.) Phuket Surfing School & Nautilus Dive Center in Kata Beach

Popular with international travellers and residents, this school is one of the first surf schools on Kata beach (if not the first).  Founded by Michael Schneider or “Kru Mike”, the instructors are experienced local surfers, highly professional and can lead group and private lessons in both Thai and fluent English.
