Klong Sang Nae | PHANG-NGA | Thailand’s Little Amazon
We had been to Phang Nga about 10 times before, but we never heard of this stunning local spot before!Β Known as Thailand’s Little Amazon, Klong Sang Nae is a truly magical mangrove forest and is a must-visit if you are in Phang Nga.
Klong Sang Nae or Sang Nae Canal is in Takua Paa, only 30 mins away from Khao Lak.Β While Khao Lak is the most popular destination in Phang Nga for internationalΒ tourists (especially for surfers), Takua Paa is a more local community with frequent Thai visitors all year round.
We took a 1-hour canoe tour with The Little Amazon tour, which is a small service set up byΒ a network of families in the local community.Β From theΒ start to the end, we were quite mind-blown.Β Check out our video here:
Each canoe fits 2 persons (plus a guide who does the rowing for you), and visitors are taken downstream for about 2 kmΒ through the deep, lush, mangrove forests.Β During the entire ride,Β were surrounded by stunning, exotic tropical trees and plants (e.g. Indian Oak, Nipa Palm,Β Celebes Fan Palm, etc.) and some VERY impressive 200 year-old networks of banyan trees.
We spotted a gold-ringed cat snake/mangrove snake, a green pit viper snake, a heron bird and a baby monitor lizard.Β Hornbills and a few other kinds of birds are known to be frequently seen here also.
Once our boats reached the end of the tour route, the guides turned our boats around and started rowing upstream back to the starting point.Β We all got to see the unspoilt nature again!Β The canal wasn’t too wide, which mean we all could have a close look at everything on both sides.
In summary, this is a GREAT thing to do in Phang Nga.Β The boat tour itself takes about an hour, but if you have some spare time and don’t mind getting your feet covered in mud, take a quick walk into the forest!Β Just like when we were on a canoe through the mangrove forest, the trees in the walking trail were so stunning and impressive.
The Little Amazon offers tours on canoes (THB 500 per person) and on small longtail boats (THB 700 per person).Β Each canoe/boat sits 2 persons plus a guide who will do all the rowing forΒ the you.Β Β Support the local community by visiting Klong Sang Nae and immerse yourself in the beautiful nature–you won’t regret it!Β π
OUR TIPS
- It’s best if you wear flip flops.
- Apply some insect repellant on your skin before entering the forest area
- Apparently the best time to go is between 9-10 in the morning.Β The guide explained that the water would be at the right level and all the roots of the mangrove tress can be seen.
